Discovering Arts in Canada

Spotlight on Member Artwork

Art by NatureEach month, a selection of DAIC artists are showcased on this page. A volunteer member searches all the artwork posted during the month and chooses several for this page. This month we are proud to feature the following DAIC members. Be sure to post your new pieces of art in our Yahoo Photo Albums each month and your art may be chosen for the world to view! Now that's a good news story!!!

Interview with Pat Alford:

  • Q: What is your favourite type of art to create? Why?
  • A: I don't know if I have one favorite but I especially enjoy painting using acrylics - there's something that happens when I paint and I see the colors start to flow changing the plain blank surface into something. I love that with acrylics I can paint almost anything using bright, vibrant colors and it adheres to most surfaces especially the gourds that I work on. I also enjoy crocheting, anyone need a scarf?, Pyrography, and carving - something I'm not great at but enjoy doing.

  • Q: What would you most still like to learn?
  • A: That is not a fair question as there are so many techniques I don't know anything about. One day would love to figure out watercolors. I've taken classes but somehow can't seem to get the concepts down on paper the way I would like it to look. Then for gourds I would like to learn something called wax resist, beading, coiling, oh how I wish could do this. Well I can but only one row.

Q: What has been the most difficult part of your artistic development? What has been the most exciting or rewarding?
  • A: The most difficult part would be having to work full time. A variety of different classes are available in the area but to many times I can't take them as I would miss a class or two. The internet has been a help but you still sometimes have to miss a class on there also. The most exciting time was when I got an opportunity to join Beaux-Art in Brampton. This is a small art community that puts on shows throughout the year allowing you to display your work to the public. They also provide a variety of classes and open workshops where you can paint in the company of others who like to paint also.

Q: What is the most unusual surface or material that you have used?
  • A: The most unusual material I've used is Powertex. This liquid can make figures, masks, animals, flowers, if you can think it you can probably do it. You and your work area are a mess, but when you are done you have a piece of art that is different from anything else you do. Neat stuff!

Q: Do you have a favourite tip or trick?
  • A: The only tip I have is to have fun doing whatever it is you like to do because if you aren't having fun doing it then it’s a chore and art should never be a chore.
